Samsung Announces SSD With 30 TB of Storage.
Updated: Jun 16, 2019
Samsung just announced the new “PM1643”, a 2.5-inch solid-state drive (SSD) with 30.72TB storage, making it the industry’s largest capacity SSD. Seems pretty insane to think that soon you’ll be able to purchase a single drive with 30TB of storage in such a compact form. How much storage is that you ask? Well according to Samsung, enough to fit around 5,700 5GB Full-HD movie files into a single device.
Samsung’s breakthrough technology was achievable by “combining 32 of the new 1TB NAND flash packages, each comprised of 16 stacked layers of 512Gb V-NAND chips. These super-dense 1TB packages allow for approximately 5,700 5-gigabyte (GB), full HD movie files to be stored within a mere 2.5-inch storage device.”
Pricing has not yet been disclosed, however I wouldn’t keep hopes too high for it being cheap, especially since their previous 15TB SSD model had a price tag of a little over $11,500. Samsung claims however that the new 30TB SSD delivers not only twice the capacity, but also twice the performance of the previous 15.36 TB high-capacity line up.
I would venture a guess and say this SSD is not the best option for video shooters or independent video production companies at the moment, not only because of the potential high price tag, but also because most video professionals choose to have their footage spread over multiple hard drives instead of carrying it all in one place.
According to Samsung’s release, the “PM1643” is targeted to meet storage needs for market segments such as government entities, oil & gas, healthcare, financial services and so on.
