In the realm of professional video production, the announcement of the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K by Blackmagic Design is a significant development. The camera offers a host of new features, making it a valuable tool for video professionals, cinematographers, and camera operators seeking to maybe upgrade their camera system.

The recording capabilities of the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K excels in capturing Blackmagic RAW footage in various formats, including 6K full-frame 3:2 at up to 36fps and 6K 2.4:1 at up to 60fps. Moreover, it enables slow-motion video recording in Full HD at up to 120fps, along with the option to generate real-time 1080p H.264 proxy files alongside the Blackmagic RAW originals. It's important to note that the camera no longer supports Apple ProRes.

At the core of this camera lies a full-frame 6K image sensor, designed with an Optical Low-Pass Filter (OLPF). This sensor's compatibility with CFexpress Type B media and its ability to support USB-C recording to external SSDs provide flexibility for recording high-quality footage.

One aspect that deserves attention is the rolling shutter performance of the new sensor. According to technical specifications provided, the rolling shutter is estimated to be approximately 25ms in 6K 3:2 Open Gate mode, reducing to 8ms in Full HD cropped mode.

In a notable shift, Blackmagic Design has embraced the L-mount alliance, moving away from the Canon EF mount. With a flange focal distance of 20mm, this mirrorless lens mount opens doors to a broader range of lenses through the use of adapters. However, due to this change, the camera cannot include built-in ND filters, which could be rather disappointing for many video experts who are used to having this feature built-in.

The Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K maintains a form factor akin to the BMPCC 6K Pro, ensuring compatibility with an array of accessories such as cages, the BMD Pro viewfinder, and battery grip. While this consistency in design benefits existing users, some may have hoped for a more compact, box-style cinema camera.

The Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K is available for pre-order with a retail price of $2,595 (B&H/CVP).
