Sigma Announces World’s Smallest Full Frame Mirrorless Camera: The Sigma fp

After introducing three new lenses yesterday, Sigma took everyone by surprise and unveiled the Sigma fp, the world’s smallest and lightest full frame camera.

With an aspect ratio of 3:2, the fp has a back illuminated 35mm Bayer image sensor with 24.6 megapixels. Sigma is apparently trying to target both photographers and videographers with this new camera, it's a cine/stills hybrid with a dedicated button to switch between the two modes, as well as a dedicated video record button.

Weighing in at 370g without card and battery (422g battery included) the camera has dimensions of 111.6 x 69.9 x 45.3mm, making it extremely portable and lightweight. The Sigma fb has a robust Aluminum body and is dust- and splash proof, allowing camera operators to film in challenging weather conditions such as rain and sandstorms (provided the cameraman uses it in conjunction with a dust- and splash proof lens).

The Sigma fp supports external recording in 12-bit CinemaDNG format (up to 4K UHD/24fps) and All-I (All-Intra) recording. Sigma made the camera’s structure much simpler by having an electronic shutter (instead of mechanical). The camera utilizes the new L-Mount, which comes as no surprise since Sigma is part of the L-Mount alliance.

The Sigma fp features a Director’s viewfinder, which allows video shooters to replicate different cameras' angle of view, anamorphic lenses, as well as film cameras. This feature supports the latest large format cameras like the ARRI ALEXA LF and RED MONSTRO 8K. The camera is powered by a dedicated Sigma lithium battery (Li-ion Battery BP-51).

In terms of special functions for videographers and filmmakers alike, the Sigma fb comes with the usual (and very important) features any good cinema camera possesses such as zebras, waveform display for color information as well as exposure, shutter angle display and so on.

All in all, the Sigma fp is extremely interesting and seems to have a lot of potential in targeting photographers and video shooters who are looking to keep their gear compact and lightweight, especially video professionals who might want to use the camera in combination with a gimbal or drone. You can find a lot more information and specs on the Sigma fp on their website here.

There is still no information on price, however the camera is expected to be shipping by September or October.
